Name: Shirou Emiya (usually rendered as EMIYA to differentiate from his past self)/Archer
Canon: Fate/Stay Night
Canon Point: After his death at the end of the Unlimited Blade Works route.
Age: Physically anywhere from his 20’s on up (it’s not clear), in actuality way way older
History:
http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Shirou_Emiya#Background His past self’s background
http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Fate_(route) the plot of the Fate route which is the closest version of the Holy Grail War that EMIYA himself went through.
EMIYA’s own backstory is split between these links
http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Archer_(Fate/stay_night)#Identity
http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Archer_(Fate/stay_night)#Unlimited_Blade_Works
Personality: The man who formerly went by the name of Shirou Emiya spent his life idolizing the concept of a hero, of someone dedicated to justice that devoted their entire being to saving others. For Shirou, that went above and beyond a simple desire to his one and only goal in life, valued far more than his happiness or personal safety. If he wasn’t saving people, then he was wasting the life that was given to him when his own adopted father saved him.
EMIYA is what Shirou got from walking down that road all his life and beyond. Years of being unable to save everyone followed by countless battles as a Counter Guardian to kill dozens or even hundreds for the “greater good” have hardened EMIYA’s heart. No longer naively dedicated to thinking he can really protect the people he cares about and everyone else in the world as well, EMIYA picks his fights with such a single-minded focus on his goals that can make him seem cold and indifferent to the wants of those around him. He’s not. He still feels and knows he’s hurting others, but now he’ll lie, cheat, and manipulate his way to what he thinks is the best result for everyone and still hate every second of it. Sure, he probably could have told Rin he was going to falsely betray her for Caster as part of a complicated plan to make sure she ended up with Saber as her Servant, since he knows she’d never approve of that he was more than prepared to play his own game, even if it made him look like a monster in the process. In his own words, his life has left him with nothing but regrets. What’s a few more on top of that?
That attitude is in part because EMIYA doesn’t actually care how he comes off. As he tells Lancer during their fight, he has no pride to begin with and will resort to as many underhanded tricks as he needs to win. This is because he doesn’t consider himself a hero, or even a good person, just the planet’s hitman sent to kill whatever needs to be killed to keep the Earth spinning. While he’s not exaggerating, this is also a view brought on by several layers of self-loathing that he’s only recently beginning to cope with. His recent conflict with his past self convinced him that he wasn’t wrong to chase the impossible flawed ideal that eventually led to his downfall, and the Unlimited Blade Works anime ends with a kernel of hope that EMIYA reflecting upon this will result in coming to terms with his life.
All the problems he has with his own fate color his interactions with others. EMIYA is cynical and sardonic, always ready with a nihilistic joke or flatly-stated insult. He prods his friends - which unsurprisingly as someone who has been alone for a long, long time, he doesn’t have a lot of - as much as he does his enemies, studying their reactions and gauging their own dedication to their ideals as someone who values dedication above all else. He’ll happily give advice on what he thinks should be done (even if that means things like trying to pressure Rin into betraying Shirou during their truce) and supports carefully planned and rational actions above all others. If it just makes sense, the more EMIYA likes it.
When he’s not being a manipulative asshole, he really does want what’s best for his friends, constantly bolstering Rin’s confidence during the early parts of the Grail War and trading jibes with Saber in an attempt to make her hold fast to her knightley nature. After all, Shirou Emiya was the type of person who would cook and do chores for everyone as much as he could every day, and some of that fastidiousness has carried over to EMIYA. (The Japanese fandom calls him “Mom” for a reason.) Above all, EMIYA doesn’t want someone to be a naive idiot that ends up unhappy clutching onto that naivety forever like him, and he’ll beat that out of his friends with sarcastic remarks, philosophical debates, or actual literal beatings if needed. Doesn’t matter if they like him or not afterwards, it’s for their own good.
Abilities/Skills: EMIYA’s primary abilities are his use of Reinforcement and Projection magecrafts. The former allows EMIYA to cast a spell (usually preceded by his personal chant “Trace on”) that makes the target more effective at what it’s conceptually supposed to do - a sword will become stronger, a freezer will start making things even colder, and so on. He mainly uses this spell on himself. Reinforcing his eyes allows him to track moving objects from up to four kilometers away, and Reinforcing his body allows him to move short distances in the blink of an eye or leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Even Reinforced, EMIYA’s physical abilities are far above even an Olympian athlete but still below those of a Servant, sort of on the lower end of superhuman as opposed to the full-on crazy strength of another Heroic Spirit. He makes up the different with pure combat ability, represented as a Servant by the skill Mind’s Eye (True). This isn’t a real supernatural ability but instead the result of EMIYA being in countless battles and constantly honing his fighting ability to the point where he naturally analyzes danger and the enemy’s fighting style even in the most hectic of combat situations. He predicts his opponent’s moves and uses his experience to control the flow of battle.
EMIYA’s Projection ability is attached to another power, Unlimited Blade Works. EMIYA can record and reproduce from nothing weapons - especially swords - that he’s encountered or even seen. This gives him the ability to not only project a bow and as many arrows as he might ever need, but also to call up a variety of magical weapons he’s come across in his lifetime as well as modify them or explosively overclock to use as a projectile weapon. His main targets are:
Kanshou and Bakuya, a pair of matched swords with a magnetic attraction that are his go to for melee combat.
Hrunting, a legendary sword modified into a form that lets EMIYA fire it as an exploding magical homing arrow.
Caladbolg II, a customized version of a legendary sword that can be fired as a powerful missile.
Rho Aias, a shield that serves as a powerful defense against projectiles.
...and a lot of generic stuff that’s never been named. All of this resides in Unlimited Blade Works, a Reality Marble (kind of like a world that exists inside EMIYA’s soul) that he can temporarily project onto his surroundings, created a bubble pocket dimension of all the swords he’s ever made or encountered, ready to be controlled and flown around by him at will. Manifesting Unlimited Blade Works both requires a lengthy chant to activate and is incredibly exhausting making it not something he does unless absolutely necessary.
On the side of not throwing exploding magical swords at people, Projection also lets EMIYA mentally analyze the structure of objects by touching them, showing up as a mental blueprint that lets him understand and repair or improve the object.

[It’s Friday night and EMIYA’s already cleaned his room - and several others nearby - to the best of his ability. For a normal person this would mean going out and socializing. For EMIYA, that means it’s time to troll the network.]
Let me ask you something, Avagi.
You’ve all been to many different worlds by now, correct? I’m sure you’ve met a lot of different people. Some of those people have been in need, some of them suffering. I’m guessing from how obliviously cheery a lot of you tend to be, you might have even helped them.
But as visitors, do we truly have any right? To simply appear from the sky one day and try to set all of their problems right? Surely it’s better to prevent natives from becoming reliant on us when we may just end up leaving them behind. It’s important for people to remember that a hero won’t always be around to help you.
[Of course, this is bullshit. He’s been one of those heroes helping them, as much as he’d never admit it. EMIYA wants to see the reactions, though. To see how others feel. Maybe some of them aren’t total idiotslike him.]
Prose/Action Sample:
Six hundred meters.
It was a small blessing to have moments like this to himself. After years (decades? Eons? He never knew) of being sent all over time and space to kill over and over on missions for the Counter Force, he had never had any time to himself beyond what little he spent sitting on that foggy hill, waiting for the next mission. Standing now, on the mountain peak of this alien world, real air hitting against his face, he remembered things he missed about being human. Things he didn’t have time to think about during the Grail War while he was too busy plotting and moving behind the scenes-
He’s scared.
Of course, it was temporary. Everything was except for his contract with the Counter Force. Soon, he’d be leaving this world behind. He remained convinced that even Avagi was simply a hold-over until his next “job”. Nothing could convince him escaping his fate was that simple.Still, there was no point in complaining. Not any more. Not after seeing his own past look him in the eyes-
He wasn’t wrong..
EMIYA - or Archer, that’s all he called himself now, anyway - allowed himself a smirk as he drew back his bow string. That petty thief actually thought he was going to get away, and seeing him panic and stumble and look back over his shoulder for the man in red hunting him down had been fun for a little bit. Fun. That was something he hadn’t allowed himself to experience...well, ever. Even has a child, really. Every moment he ever lived was for someone else-
Fire.
His fingers let the string loose. The arrow sailed the distance from his cliffside perch to the target below, causing the thief to fall and howl in pain as the arrow pierced his leg. The money in the bag the robber was carrying scattered onto the ground in front of him.
Archer jumped down from the cliff, ready to collect and mock his quarry. This moment? This could be just for him.
